The Team

TOME Studios was created by two guys who are passionate about developing apps and games they want to see on the App Store. Between them, they share many years of experience in both the game development industry, working on such titles as Tribes and Bioshock, and in developing high quality software for the Mac, iPhone and other embedded devices.

This combination of talent, drive and ambition along with the enjoyment of doing what they do is taking themselves and TOME Studios to the next level with some amazing apps on the horizon. And while their passion for app creation is filling their own needs, they’re sure you’ll be just as excited about every app they make.

Programming, Design – Josh Bobruk

Hi. I’m Josh and I’m the guy in charge of all the software for TOME Studios. From a very young age I was an engineer who loved to create. I was always mystified with how computers worked and I just had to know more.. My first computer program was written when I was 10 and while it was only very simple, it set me off on a creating spree. But I tended towards electronics and spent quite some time wielding a +1 soldering iron.

I followed this path for years and ended up getting a software degree in robotics and computer vision. But something was missing.. I was creating but it wasn’t very creative. I love the thrill of a new challenge though so I continued to work in the field of embedded electronics and wrote lots of software for essentially mobile devices, and filled the creative gaps by building scale models and other geeky things as a hobby.

The release of the iPhone really caught my attention. I had been learning Apple technologies in my spare time for the two years prior and it seemed to be the perfect opportunity to create software that individuals out there could actually enjoy. I moved jobs and negotiated more freedom so I could start my own business. I wrote my own 2D game engine from scratch and made some games. Success was fast and I released a number of iPhone games in quick succession. Things were looking so good that I decided to go it alone and run my own business full time which had always been a dream.

It was about this time that I met up with Alex. Alex had a lot of talent so I quickly upgraded everything to 3D so I could better support his skills. Alex had left his full time job at this stage so the stage was set and TOME Studios was created.

I really enjoy tactical and strategic games and spent countless hours of my youth in front of games like X-Com and Master of Orion among others. As well as being part of TOME Studios, I still run my solo projects and I freelance my software skills to local companies to keep my own skills fresh and make sure every game I make is using the best technologies out there.

With the games we’re putting together I believe I’ve finally found the balance between technology and creativity and I really hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them.

Art, Design – Alex ‘Moj’ Boylan

Hey, Alex here, the art and design side of TOME Studios. My passion for games and gaming has existed for as long as I can remember, playing various tabletop games, board games, card games and the occasional pen and paper RPG. But my love for them began around the time the Amiga 500 and Sega Mastersystem II entered the household. I was enthralled. These games had even greater creativity and depth than those at the arcade and I didn’t have to fork out hard-earned pocket money for a turn.

Many years on as an avid PC gamer, I was introduced to the modding community by a game called Half-Life. An entire community of talented individuals developing their own game ideas and releasing them for free for their own enjoyment! It was at this point I realised the very real possibility of making my own games and dreamt of one day running my own company.

My first break came when joining the development team behind the mod, Natural-Selection – a highly regarded mod in the HL community – and with it’s successful release, later helped me score a position as a junior artist with Irrational Games. A paying job in the industry, I couldn’t be more excited! While working at Irrational, I was fortunate to be a part of such titles as Freedom Force, Tribes, SWAT, Bioshock, Bioshock 2 and XCOM.

I’d gained years of experience and my dream of running my own company was still alive and kicking and with the release of the iPhone and App store I saw a opportunity to make it as an indie developer, but I needed help. Luckily for me, a short while later I was introduced to a skilled programmer named Josh, who I soon discovered shared a similar passion for games and development. Coincidentally, we’d met as he was quitting his full-time job at a software firm and was working towards following his own dream of developing apps for a living. Within the year, I’d said my goodbyes to my Irrational family and soon after, TOME Studios was formed.

I know this indie developer gig is going to be difficult and we may have to get a few contract jobs along the way to keep us afloat, but with the help and support of all of you, I hope to see TOME become a successful game dev studio in the near future. Really looking forward to showing you what we have to offer!

Additional Developers

Of course we couldn’t do everything on our own. Here’s a list of the other talented individuals we’re working with to bring our games to life. And a huge THANKS to them for all the great work they’ve done so far!

Writing – James ‘Screamin’ Eagle

A quirky, misunderstood mastermind and loveable vagabond. Responsible for the fiction behind Danger Alliance – the world, characterisation, dialogue. On the sidelines from before TOME was TOME, without him DA would have very little of it’s spicy flavour.

Music – Brendon Kirk

Musician, composer and game developer. The (now slightly less) mysterious contributor of all the music in Danger Alliance.

Sound Design – Rhett Parkinson

This talented musician / composer and sound designer has happily loaned us his skills to develop all the sound effects in Danger Alliance and he has not let us down.
